As I am about to post this blog piece, I just got a call from a man named Garvard Good Plume at Pine Ridge telling me that Wounded Knee is being auctioned off RIGHT NOW.  I feel sick.  Meanwhile, here's what I wrote earlier today....

I am sitting in a cafe in Rapid City, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation, early for my interview with Charmaine White Face.  I watched the riveting, heartbreaking and informative film "Red Cry" for the second time last night to prepare for this interview.  I also studied the very specific and helpful directives about how non-indigenous people can support indigenous people at www.lakotagrandmothers.org.

I haven't had much time to keep up with blogging... I spent almost a week in Oklahoma, camping near Ponca City with the Great Plains Tar Sands Resistance Camp - no electricity in my tent (although one tent did have a windmill and solar panels - I kid you not!).  Although the action that we were training for all week didn't come off as planned, the overall experience came together as one of the most valuable I've had so far in a totally unexpected way.

CJE Friday News BriefsHouse Renews Violence Against Women Measure

WS – The politics of beating women. How fu$king shameful… 138 “grown ups” actually voted against this. They all should be “Bitch Slapped”!

The House on Thursday gave final approval to a renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, sending a bipartisan Senate measure to President Obama after a House plan endorsed by conservatives was defeated.
The legislation passed on a vote of 286 to 138, with 199 Democrats joining 87 Republicans in support of the reauthorization of the landmark 1994 law, which assists victims of domestic and sexual violence. It amounted to a significant victory for the president and Congressional Democrats, who have assailed Republicans for months for stalling the legislation. More…

US sees ‘biggest-ever’ climate protest over Keystone XL pipeline
Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Washington, DC, on Sunday to protest the controversial Keystone XL project, which would see an oil pipeline run across the US Midwest.

The march’s organizers, environmental movement 350.org, estimated that 40,000 people from 30 states took part in the ‘Forward on Climate’ rally, described as the biggest climate march in US history; police have not yet provided an official estimate.

Protesters chanted "Keystone pipeline? Shut it down," as they marched around the White House, calling on President Obama to reject the Keystone proposal and follow through on climate pledges made during his inaugural

Gasland Benefit: Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Josh FoxNew York, October 18, 2012 -- As the hydrofracking issue becomes increasingly contentious, with deadlines approaching on every front, opponents are mounting efforts to alert residents both Upstate and in New York City to the hotly debated drilling technique's dangers. Residents of the Southern Tier, which sits on top of the Marcellus Shale, are concerned about known carcinogens in the water used in the drilling process, waste water and air pollution from methane gas, as well as the loss of their homes' real estate value once the land has been contaminated. Clean-water advocates in New York City share their concern about pollution of the aquifer which, they fear, could affect the city's watershed due to seepage of chemicals used in fracking. Also, local environmentalists and residents are worried about potentially dangerous levels of radon in Marcellus Shale natural gas. And there is also fear over the risk of pipeline explosions in a dense urban area, such as the West Village, where the Gansevoort Peninsula is the endpoint for a 16-mile, 30-inch, high-pressure pipeline that Spectra is constructing from New Jersey under the Hudson River. On Oct. 18 there was a special screening of the Academy Award-nominated film "Gasland" at the IFC Center on Sixth Ave. at W. Third St.

Spectra Spells Disaster Capitalism
New York, December 1, 2012--Today's 1 pm protest rally at Spectra Energy's construction site in the West Village had as its focus the expedited construction work taking place this week-end. Prior to shutting up shop for the winter, Spectra is rushing through the installation of their high pressure natural gas pipeline under the Hudson from New Jersey to emerge at the Gansevoort site, where Con Edison will pick up the work and build out the last section of the pipe to link to their distribution system. About 150 to 200 people attended the rally, organized by Occupy the Pipeline. Monica Hunken of OTP and Clare Donohune, of Sane Energy Project, commented on the significant gas news of the week: namely, the passage of HR 2606 by President Obama which will allow drilling to take place in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, areas reserved for recreation; and in an instance of particularly egregious timing, a pipeline to be constructed through the Rockaways, an area devastated by hurricane Sandy and still in the process of recovery.

breaking! breaking!

evan vokes, a whistle blower, who was also an engineer at transCanada, has the National Energy Board of canada up transCanada's arse!

vokes tried every approach he could through the company's chain of command, using transCanada protocol. he climbed all the way up the ladder wagging his precautionary tail, all the way to ceo russ girling's office, and after having his concerns for safety in regards to his company's pipelines being brushed off by the company he worked for, and being severly distressed at their ambivalence, he went on "stress" leave in november of 2011. vokes took his leave for health related issues in regards to his concern for what he had witnessed first hand on the job. by the end of march, he finally met with canada's National Energy Board, to discuss the list of infractions and concerns, he had in regards to transCanada's practices on their pipelines, and on may 1st, voke's filed the official papework as a complainant with the NEB. on may 8th, vokes was relieved of his position as an engineer for transCanada, when he was summarily fired. this and worse is often the fate of those who have the strength to step forward into the role of truthsayer.

Then I was in Texas at the Tar Sands Blockade

I arrived in East Texas September 29th, 2012. Drove into a small Eastern Texas Town, where the houses pushed back from the yards sprinkled with drought dried grass. I came to cover a story about some folks who built a wall against the KXL pipeline.  A pipeline cutting a swath across the belly of the United States like some deep burnt scar. It's tube to be filled with Tar Sands Bitumen.

I learned about the Alberta Tar Sand where the bitumen was being shipped from years ago at a workshop at an enviromental conference called Powershift. Indigenous folks told stories of machines that dug up around their communities pressing the sand into some sort of high pressure goop that's pushed through the pipes like a super heated laser. Turning the top soil into a dead scar.

Spectra Pipeline Protest at Gansevoort Pier
New York, September 12, 2012--To protest the construction of a "natural" fracked gas pipeline by Spectra Energy Corp. at the Gansevoort Pier in the West Village, five fracktivists entered the construction site and temporarily impeded operations; two of them, David Publow and Monica Hunken, by locking themselves to equipment with bicycle locks, three others by blocking equipment with their bodies. While the Hudson River Park Trust granted permission for an easement for this pipeline, no environmental review of the project has ever been conducted. Diana Taylor, Mayor Bloomberg's girl friend, heads the board of the Hudson River Park Trust and the Mayor himself is a staunch advocate of "natural" gas, and a proponent of "demand" creation for this radon-bearing substance obtained by injecting millions of gallons of water and 596 toxic chemicals to break up the shale.

Spectra Pipeline Regulatory Status: Interview w/ Clare Donohue, Sane Energy Project
NEW YORK, September 6, 2012--During an interview at the evening rally protesting the construction of the Spectra Pipeline at Gansevoort and West Side Highway in the West Village, Clare Donohue, a founder of Sane Energy Project, explains the current regulatory status of the pipeline. Although FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Agency has approved construction, which is ongoing, environmentalists have requested a rehearing petition on the grounds that approval was arbitrary and capricious. Sane Energy Project founded in January 2011, has vigorously opposed the pipeline. The pipeline will deliver fracked gas from the Marcellus Shale upstate to link up with the Con Edison grid. It will emerge right next to the new downtown Whitney Museum, now under construction and in the vicinity of a children's playground.
