An interview with Kathy Kelly from Voices for Creative Nonviolence
On April 19th, 2013, I interviewed Kathy Kelly—a co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, which is a campaign to end United States military and economic warfare. The website is VCNC dot org. Kathy has lived in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen and one of the roles she will play at the convergence is to relay those experiences and give a human voice to the lived reality of people over seas who deal with drone surveillance and are murdered by drone attacks on a daily basis. Kathy, and many others, will be attending “Resisting Drones, Global War and Empire" convergence, April 26 - 28 in Syracuse, NY. On Guard! Your Government Isn't Trustworthy! An interview with Col. (ret.) Ann Wright
On April 19, 2013, Rochester Indymedia interviewed Col. (ret.) Ann Wright, a former US Army colonel and diplomat who resigned over the invasion of Iraq. She has since become an advocate for peace and an anti-war speaker and organizer. She will be going to Syracuse, NY on April 26-28th for the “Resisting Drones, Global War and Empire" convergence. (See the FaceBook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/540569232649914/?ref=22.)
In this interview, Ann talks about her decision to leave the government, blowback from families of people murdered by drones, the abolition of the war machine, and drone programs in other countries, among other topics. Her prefered sites of information on drones are Know Drones dot com, a Code Pink effort called Drones Watch dot org, and of course, Upstate Drone Action dot org.
It is problematic when the US leads the way in illegal use of weapon systems (drones). You can be assured that other countries will follow suit very quickly.

Gasland Benefit: Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Josh Fox
| Gasland Benefit: Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Josh FoxNew York, October 18, 2012 -- As the hydrofracking issue becomes increasingly contentious, with deadlines approaching on every front, opponents are mounting efforts to alert residents both Upstate and in New York City to the hotly debated drilling technique's dangers. Residents of the Southern Tier, which sits on top of the Marcellus Shale, are concerned about known carcinogens in the water used in the drilling process, waste water and air pollution from methane gas, as well as the loss of their homes' real estate value once the land has been contaminated. Clean-water advocates in New York City share their concern about pollution of the aquifer which, they fear, could affect the city's watershed due to seepage of chemicals used in fracking. Also, local environmentalists and residents are worried about potentially dangerous levels of radon in Marcellus Shale natural gas. And there is also fear over the risk of pipeline explosions in a dense urban area, such as the West Village, where the Gansevoort Peninsula is the endpoint for a 16-mile, 30-inch, high-pressure pipeline that Spectra is constructing from New Jersey under the Hudson River. On Oct. 18 there was a special screening of the Academy Award-nominated film "Gasland" at the IFC Center on Sixth Ave. at W. Third St. |
The Fiscal Cliff & Our Reality
The Fiscal Cliff and Our Reality.
A presentation followed by general discussion.
First Unitarian Universalist Church. 5212 S. Claiborne Avenue. New Orleans.
Since Election 2012 the “fiscal cliff” has emerged as the dominant issue of public discourse in this country. The President and the Congress agree that something must be done to prevent the U.S. from going over the fiscal cliff. The talking heads of the corporate media maintain that the only way the U.S. Government can avoid going over the fiscal cliff is through “shared sacrifices” by rich and poor alike in the name of getting America’s fiscal house in order.
The fiscal cliff debate raises questions of profound importance to the 99 percent. What is the fiscal cliff? How does downsizing “entitlements” in the pursuit of lower public debt really affect the 99 percent? Is what’s presented as “shared sacrifice” really shared in any meaningful sense of the word?
Watch and contribute to public discussion of the fiscal cliff issue from a 99 percent perspective

#S17 #OWS Birthday Party
One year ago a small group of predominantly Anarchists sparked a horizontally organized movement to level the playing field in the game of Corporations -vs- The People of the United States. Today we celebrated our success and contemplated our future. We licked old wounds and created new ones. We turned a critical eye to the process that has guided us and acknowledged it's short comings so that our second year of existence will be one of effectiveness even if it means dropping the verb. To Occupy.

Save Iceland, Vote Jacquelyn McCormick for Mayor
On Tuesday, September 11, the Berkeley City Council voted against holding a public hearing before handing over Iceland, the city's beloved ice rink, to the owners of Sports Basement to open the newest location for their sporting goods chain. Jacquelyn McCormick and dozens of other supporters of Iceland spoke against turning over the historical landmark to become a big box retail outlet, but their efforts to sway the council were unsuccessful. The Council voted eight to zero to move forward and to deny the public a hearing. Council member Darryl Moore abstained from the vote after calling on his council members to hold a public hearing. Council member Linda Maio was absent. |

On Acts of God & Men
it's my fifth day in the sunshine state, and our third day as the flagship independent media bus for the republican convention.
we've not seen a lot of action here yet on the front ... it rains ... and then it rains some more... and then more. there's been meetings and trainings for the protestors. i've watched golf carts being piggy-backed in on flat bed trucks by the dozen ... and there are hundreds, nay thousands of sections of barricades being erected to provide a "free speech" zone where citizens and protestors are to be corralled and controlled for their own "protection." there was the transfer of an entire population of inmates from a local jail, to make room for potential arrestees ... and the newest mainstream media hub bub: the suspicious discovery on a rooftop in the event zone, that ominously points to the threat of "anarchist violence," coupled with the circulation of a video by "anonymous," promising more of the same, which smacks of forgery to those who know the hallmarks of true anon representation.

letters from the front
it's late, or very early in the morning. i can't sleep. i'm heading to tampa soon as an activist and an independent journalist. for the first time i'm armed with a press pass, and a camera, and my computers. we're to cover the conventions, for this, the great election cycle of 2012. the end of the mayan calendar, the beginning of a whole new world, the zombie apocalypse upon us. the democrats and the republicans have spent a total of 50 million dollars a piece on security for their respective conventions, and the air is brittle with the anticipation of mayhem in the streets. it's gonna be a shit show, folks, with homeland security, militarized police, trapwire, and animosity aplenty, toward anyone who dares to say no to the political machine and the police state that is slowly and silently gnawing with their rotten teeth on the tongue of our free speech.

Environmental Mobilization and the Summer of Solidarity
this is the summer of "solidarity & mobilization," where convergences on emergency action in an attempt to restore environmental sanity to a crazy, overheated, world are taking place. this past weekend was chock full of extraction awareness trainings and action campaigns, from the tar sands blockade training in east texas, to the "stop the frack attack" teach-in and rally in dc, and the ramps "mountain justice mobilization" in west virginia. all in all, thousands of concerned citizens and environmental activists gathered for these events.
the "stop the frack attack" campaign drew thousands of concerned citizens who descended upon the capital from across the nation and the world, to protest the use of hydraulic fracturing as a method to extract natural gas and oil from shale beds and abandoned coal mines. this method includes drilling through the earth's crust, smashing up rocks in a dormant well site and capturing the vapors. it has been known to make water so toxic it can literally be set on fire while streaming out of the taps. it is also believed that it destabilizes bed rock to the degree that it creates small earth quakes in areas where fracking is practiced.
